  • 5 Options If Your Windows 10 PC FAILS The Windows 11 Compatibility Test

As you may have heard, Windows 10 will officially reach the end of its life on October 14, 2025. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide free security updates, non-security updates, or technical support for this version. While this doesn’t mean your PC will stop functioning, it does mean you’ll be responsible for keeping your device secure and running efficiently on your own.

If you’ve tried upgrading to Windows 11 but your PC failed the compatibility checker and showed an error message, don’t worry—you still have options.

Here are 5 practical options for your situation:

1. Ignore the Deadline

We don’t recommend this option, but technically, it’s available.
Once Windows 10 support ends, your PC will no longer receive security updates to protect against cyberthreats or viruses. You’ll need to find an alternative way to safeguard your system, which could leave gaps in protection. Additionally, the absence of technical support and non-security updates could lead to performance issues, affecting your business operations.

2. Switch to a Linux Operating System

If you’re not ready to replace your PC and have the technical know-how, consider switching to Linux. This open-source operating system can be a viable alternative to Windows. However, transitioning to Linux can come with its own set of challenges, like compatibility issues with existing applications or the steep learning curve of a new operating system. This option is best for tech-savvy users who are ready to troubleshoot on their own.

3. Upgrade “Incompatible” PCs Using a Technical Workaround

Just because your PC fails the compatibility checker doesn’t mean all hope is lost. With a few adjustments, you might still be able to install Windows 11.

According to ZDNET, this involves making a small registry edit and ensuring your PC is configured with Secure Boot and Trusted Platform Module (TPM) settings.

While this method can work, it comes with risks. You may see warnings such as, “If you proceed with installing Windows 11, your PC will no longer be supported and won’t be entitled to receive updates. Damages to your PC due to lack of compatibility aren’t covered under the manufacturer warranty.”

This doesn’t mean your data will suddenly disappear; it simply removes liability from Microsoft or the PC manufacturer.

4. Pay for Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESUs)

While Microsoft will end free security updates for Windows 10, they’ve announced a subscription-based Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, available for up to three years.

Before choosing this option, here are key details:

  • Cost for Businesses:

    • Year 1: $61

    • Year 2: $122

    • Year 3: $244
Total: $427 over three years (50% more than Windows 7 ESUs).

  • Cost for Educators:

    • Year 1: $1

    • Year 2: $2

    • Year 3: $4

Important Notes:

  • ESUs are cumulative, so you can’t skip years. You’ll need to purchase year one before subscribing to year two, and so on.

  • This does not include technical support, meaning you’re on your own for troubleshooting.

It’s clear Microsoft intends for these ESUs to be a short-term solution, pushing users toward upgrading to Windows 11.

5. Purchase a New PC

If your current PC is aging or nearing obsolescence, buying a new, Windows 11-compatible computer is likely the best option. Modern PCs not only run faster but also offer enhanced security and productivity features.

Before making your purchase, be sure to back up your data regularly. Losing important information during a transition is a headache you don’t want to deal with.
